How to make a marking pencil out of a drill

Such a pencil is necessary for everyone who works with metal. With its help, it is easy to apply marking lines that cannot be washed off from the surface of a part or workpiece.

To make a marking pencil, you will need a bar of brass. Its optimum diameter - 1 ... 1.8 cm, is selected by the user at his discretion. A thin (2 ... 6 mm) broken drill is also necessary for crafts. To fasten the parts, you need to prepare superglue or epoxy.

Of the tools used at work: band saw; a lathe; a file; vice, sandpaper of different grain size; a grinder with a grinding disc; turning tools.

At first they work with a brass bar. It is clamped in the grip of a band saw. Launch it and cut a piece of length equal to approximately the size of a fountain pen.

The workpiece is clamped in the lathe chuck, the protruding end face is machined, making it even. Turn the workpiece over and repeat the same operations with the other end of the bar.

They supply the tailstock of the lathe with a drill bit slightly larger than the previously prepared broken drill. An axial hole is drilled at the end of the brass bar. The drill is periodically pulled out to facilitate chip exit. This is necessary since brass is a soft and viscous material.

Using a cutter, the end of the rod with an axial hole is turned into a cone, as is the case with a sharpened pencil. The conical surface is filed, smoothing the bumps left by the cutter.

A cutter on the surface of the bar, near the base of the conical part, arrange a notch in the form of 5 ... 10 parallel shallow grooves, spaced 3 ... 5 mm from each other. It is needed to securely hold the future pencil in your hands. Grind the front of the future pencil with sandpaper.

Turn the workpiece over, insert it again into the chuck of the lathe, arrange a notch of 3 ... 4 grooves near the end, as was done in the front part.

Take a broken drill, clamp it with a shank in a screwdriver. Turn on the device and grind the front part on the grinder. As a result, it should turn into a sharp cone with a length of 0.5 ... 1 cm.

A little epoxy is prepared by mixing it with a hardener. Lubricate the shank of the drill with it and introduce it into the axial hole at the pointed end of the brass bar. After the resin has hardened, clean the compound.

A pencil made from a drill allows marking on textolite and metal.
